Information about atlas

Hi! I'm sorry! I can read french but I prefer to write in english. I hope there is no problem.
I would like to know If Attacus atlas can have 6 instars. some months ago I bought some cocoons of attacus atlas (at least is what I thought) and I got pairs. Now I have caterpillars that changed into 6th instar. They are similar to atlas but near the anal segment they have a blue spot instead of the caracteristic red/orange ring. They are from Indonesia and the adults really looked like atlas. Do you have any idea if this is an atlas or other Attacus sp.?

First, Welcome !! There is no problem with english, that's good to have differents people from differents country, but i'll try to translate you for the others who don't read english.

Please can you indicate your state and location In your "Profil" ;-)

So for your problem, there is only one word that i don't understand it's "6 th instar" what does it mean, it's to have a L6 caterpillar and not a L5 as a final level?

But for the blue ring, when i had atacus atlas i've never seen this, it was orange/ red near the anal segments as you said.... But you know that there are also Attacus Lorquini, edwarsii which have larva similar to attacus atlas.... But for the attacus edwarsii it's in the humid mountains of himalaya, and in asia, but it seems to be also in other places...

So maybe you have one of this species, because i've never see in real attacus lorquini and edwarsii... I've seen Attacus caesar but at the final level, the larva is green so we can move apart this species.

Can you give us the size of your adults moth ? But i think its attacus lorquini because the adult realy looks like an Attacus atlas the is not a great difference between the two species

If you have somme alive specimen to sell i'm very interested.

yes, several large Satruniidae can go to 6th instar, especially if females. I observed 6th instars in some A. atlas larvae, they were 7 cm long when stopping to eat, for their 5th moult.
I observed this also in a larva of Saturnia pavonia.

Oui!

L1 = chenille nouveau-hachée.
L2 = chenille après la première mue.
L3 = chenille après la 2ème mue.
L4 = chenille après la 3ème mue
L5 = chenille après le 4ème mue (habituellement le stade final)
L6 = chenille après le 5ème mue.

Certain Automeris vont également à L7!
